Truly
a Rarity - Two Soap Hollow Pieces

Soap
Hollow Blanket Chest. Wonderful small size -
17 by 33 1/2 by 14 1/2 inches.
Stencil
decoration over grain painting.
Based
upon the grain painted base coat and the eschutchen
decoration,
I
attribute this to Christian C. Blough and date is circa
1855.
It
looks as though someone tried to clean it but kept away from
the decoration.
There
is evidence of worm hole in the back and bottom.

Soap
Hollow Chest of Drawers dated 1862 on the sides.
Old
finish with red around drawer edges; excellent stencil
decoration. Raised side panels.
Made
by a yet unnamed craftsman, this relates to a blanket chest
of drawers dated a year earlier.
The
latter is in The Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
This
piece was featured in an ad by Tom Brown of McMurray,
Pa.,
"Ohio
Antique Review," Oct. 1980.

| An
excellent Shaker production chair, this No. 3
was a gift from Sister Sadie Neale to her
niece, Ethel M. Peterson (nee Demout).
Fine finish and good Mt. Lebanon decal.
New tapes cover the old original seat
including ticking. |
|
|
|
While
this No. 3 is refinished and retaped
seat,
it
is an opportunity to have an original Shaker
chair for under $300.
